Network Documentation: The Map You'll Be Glad You Drew

Undocumented Means Unknown at 2 AM
Many networks exist only in one person's memory. That works — until that person is unavailable and something is down. Then every minute is spent rediscovering how the network is built.
What to Capture
Keep a current diagram of how devices connect, an inventory of switches, firewall, access points and servers with their addresses, a record of internet links and accounts, and notes on key configuration and credentials stored securely. Date it, and update it when things change.
This is not bureaucracy — it is recovery speed. A clear, current map turns a frightening outage into a methodical fix, and makes every future change safer. The best time to draw it is before you need it.
