For an Indian business, the data is in the cloud is an incomplete answer. Where it physically resides — and where its backups reside — increasingly carries legal and contractual weight.

What to Check

Know which region your cloud workloads and backups are provisioned in; the default is not always the one you want. Understand your obligations under India's data-protection rules and any sector-specific requirements that apply to you. Where customers or regulators expect data kept in India, configure for it deliberately rather than assuming.

Cloud providers offer Indian regions and the controls to use them. The responsibility for switching them on, and for knowing where every copy sits, is yours.
