Avoiding Cloud Vendor Lock-In Without Crippling Yourself

April 29, 20260 views

Lock-In Is a Spectrum, Not a Switch

Every cloud platform creates some dependence — that is part of the value. The mistake is either ignoring lock-in entirely or contorting your architecture to avoid it at any cost.

A Measured Position

Keep your data in portable formats and know how you would export it. Favour open standards and containers where it is cheap to do so. But do not refuse genuinely useful managed services purely on principle — the productivity is real.

The practical aim is informed dependence: understand what it would take to leave, document it, and avoid being surprised by an exit cost or a contract renewal. Lock-in chosen with open eyes is a business decision; lock-in discovered later is a trap.
